Renewed Every Morning

Lamentations 3:19-22: “I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. …Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Several years ago I sprawled these words on a piece of scrap paper: “I am an open, bleeding wound that is not allowed to heal. I feel as though I have a broken leg, but I just keep walking on it. (The difference is that my mind and soul are what is broken.) I’m standing on the outside of life watching myself go through the motions, but I want to participate again. I want to feel like a person; to be whole once more. God, I want to know and feel your love. I long for my ‘performing’ and doing to become one with who I am. I know that it can be.”

That last sentence amazes me. It indicates that I had not completely lost hope, even though I was sad, disappointed, and bitter. One day at a time God’s love reached out to me. He bandaged my wounds and set my broken heart. It took time, but I am participating in life again. Every morning, whether it is sunny or cloudy, God renews and helps me. And he wants to do the same for you. He is faithful. Let God’s love renew you.

Lord, I don’t know just how you will do it,
but I am hopeful.
Continue to restore me.
I want to live.
