Default The Unexpected

The Unexpected

Things are not always what they seem to be, and events do not always turn out as we plan them. These statements may be truisms, but sometimes they catch us off guard. The twists and turns of life's surprises are going to touch us, no matter what we do. Some of the surprises may have a touch of comedy about them, while others will strike us as tragic. But there is an advantage to being open to the unexpected in our lives, no matter what form it takes. We survive more realistically when we are ready for it. Our own misunderstandings create some of the twists and turns of life. Sometimes we miscalculate the meaning of others' actions. We mistake people's shyness for dislike, or awkwardness for stupidity. Eventually we discover that things are often different from what they seemed to be. The same can be true for events in our lives that we regard as personal setbacks or disasters. Time often proves that things are different from what we thought they were.

One has to be prepared for surprise twists because the unexpected seems to be such an integral part of life. If we miss the surprise twists, we miss the truth of life itself.

Lord, keep me from rigid perspectives and false judgments. May I remain open to the unexpected in my life, to all the twists and turns that make up its meaning.
